Volume 17 Issue 4 (2024)
Dr Pratyush Kumar’s book review of Giuseppe Martinico’s “Filtering Populist Claims to Fight Populism: The Italian Case in a Comparative Perspective” is a contemporary comment on the manifestation of populism within systems of democratic constitutionalism. It offers a comparative perspective in the form of a “historical-factual background” tracing the developments of constitutionalism in Italy and Germany post the Second World War. Dr Kumar also critiques some elements of Martinico’s work, especially the lack of clarity surrounding the meanings of “mimetism” and “parasitism”. Dr Kumar also comments on the need for judicial review as a “counter-majoritarian force” against “populist attacks”. Here, he offers relevant insight into the Indian judicial system, and he calls it “judicial legislations”. In all, this Book Review can help us make sense of the recent Indian socio-political climate from a comparative lens.
